Who We Are... Paul Farr, Lay Speaker describes Lockport UMC...... When I first came to First UMC of Lockport, my family and I were welcomed with open arms by people we didn't even know. The tradition continues today to new visitors as well as long time members. The congregation is a group of people that are genuinely family. They care about one another, they pray for one another and they share what they have with others to make peoples lives better. Over the years that I have attended the church it has been involved in community projects like Habitat for Humanity, Red Bird Mission and the Ecumenical Fish Food Pantry. We have an in-house ministry called "Circle of Love" which is a one of a kind ministry that offers free goods to young families in need of diapers and other baby products. It is all given in the love of Christ. It is wonderful that there are so many people involved in service to others for God at First UMC. My most memorable event happened when I was helping by visiting members at home or in the hospital. The very first time I went and visited someone, I decided to pray with them and to my amazement when I finished, they started praying for me. I was trying to share and make them feel good by offering prayers for them, and I was overwhelmed that they thought of me instead of themselves while they laid ill in the hospital. First UMC is a praying church and a healing church. I am fortunate to be a part of Gods' plan there. The membership is clearly focused on reaching out and offering love and prayer throughout the community they serve. Here's what our members are saying.... I started coming to this church because.... Of family... After our first visit to Lockport First UMC, a member called to ask if he could bring over a bunt cake (or a nut bread or something like that). We said “sure” and that’s what he did. He didn’t stay to pressure us into joining or anything like that. He just dropped off the baked goods and let us know that everyone would love to see us come back again. There was no doubt in our minds that this was a warm and loving church, filled with people who cared about each other... I liked the Minister, he seemed down to earth and friendly,it was a breath of fresh air and it felt like a good fit for our family... This church had more parking than did another Methodist church...
The greatest gift this church has given me..... Faith... Love... Unconditional love and support during a health crises; this congregation was the "Wind Beneath My Wings" Fellowship... To see God not as a vengeful God but a God of love who enabled me to help others in ways I never dreamed I could do... Independence... It has helped me to find my faith.... Loving support during some very difficult times for our family and an opportunity to give back to the people and community that have helped us so much...
The opportunity to do God's work... The lesson to take joy in changes I can see and to hold faith for the changes yet to come... Word that best describes this church is... Family... Compassionate... Prayerful.... Caring... Simple... Faithful.....to our beliefs and to each other |
